NQN - Neuquén, Patagonia, Argentina

Neuquén is a province of Argentina, located at the northern end of the Patagonia region. It is bordered by the Colorado River and Mendoza Province to the North, La Pampa Province at the northeastern corner, the Limay River and Rio Negro Province to the South and East, and the Andes and Chile to the West. The province's western region is mountainous with forested valleys while the eastern region is an arid plateau. The weather is continental and cool, with temperate summers and, in the East, wide, desert-like overnight temperature swings.

Neuquén city is the capital of Neuquén Province and the location of the Presidente Perón International Airport (IATA airport symbol: NQN). Neuquén's economy is dominated by petroleum production, and the confluence of major rivers makes Neuquén a source of hydroelectric power. Local agriculture emphasizes fruit production and there is a growing regional wine industry.

Neuquén has tourism options for all seasons. The province is home to Los Arrayanes National Park with its magnificent Chilean Myrtle (Luma apiculata) forest. There are also Lanín National Park and the Lanín extinct volcano, Nahuel Huapí National Park (shared with Río Negro Province) and Laguna Blanca National Park. In addition to the parks, popular destinations include the picturesque towns San Martín de los Andes and Villa La Angostura in the South of the province via scenic National Route 234 (Camino de los Siete Lagos - "The Way of Seven Lakes") which connects them. There are hot baths on the Copahue volcano near the Chilean border. In winter there is skiing at Chapelco, Cerro Bayo and Caviahue. Trout fishing excursions are available on the Limay and Neuquén rivers, and the southwestern lake district offers a variety of recreational opportunities. The Valley of the Dinosaurs near Neuquén city is world-renowned for the numerous prehistoric discoveries that have been made there, including the bones of Argentinosaurus and Giganotosaurus carolinii (respectively, the largest herbivorous and carnivorous dinosaurs ever discovered).
